So have any of you finalized your class/race pick for the release?
What stood out between the classes for you.
I am interested to see the reasons behind your choices.

Classes I liked: engineer, necro, mesmer, and warrior
I'm going to play 2 or 3 different classes at once since I figured out how to level fairly quickly. Engineer or Necro will be my main then have a warrior for some tanking abilities for pve/wvw. I like the engineer for the range and explosions but necro is what I played in GW1 and I still feel it will be the shizz for condition application. I played more necro than engineer or warrior but I had fun with all 3 of those classes. The mes I was able to play for a few hours and I liked the idea behind it but I think it's lacking the old mesmer feel. I'm just not a fan of the clones.

I liked how versatile the class was with different weapon setups. I'm pretty sure warrior will continue to be my main come release.

The last BWE I played as an Ele and Warrior. I didn't like the ele as much because I was a little overwhelmed with all the different moves that I could do. It would take a ton of time and practice if you wanted to be a truly good ele, but the versatility it has leaves it with tons of potential. I played a sylvari warrior through lvl 22 and I loved it a lot. I played the 2h sword/sword warhorn combo which gave you TONS of maneuverability. This allows you to dash at your enemies as they run away, or get away from a group while still doing damage. On the pvp side of things, it was kind of difficult versus a group of rangers, but get them into a 1v1 or 2v1 situation, and you can have the upperhand with some well placed stuns.
Overall, I think I will be playing the warrior to start the game off with.

I pretty much only tested ranged professions, as I've never really been into melee ones. I really liked my engineer, but it might not be for me. I loved my mesmer, all the clones and stuff. I liked my ele, but then I've always liked them, and I haven't tested necro enough. Should also still try a ranger, I really liked my GW1 ranger, but now it just doesn't seem to appeal to me as much. I'm still undecided XD.
I don't know if there is technically "Range or melee" professions. On my warrior I spent most of my time using a rifle or longbow and feeling pretty badass using them. I know the ranger and thief are the same way. The casters like ele/necro/mesmer might not have any melee weapon abilities to swap too though. So maybe there just isn't any dedicated melee professions.

1. Elementalist - They are awesome, lots of skill will be required for them however. In arena pvp they are targetted rather quickly and die pretty fast. In open world PVP they can get lost in the mix pretty well. They have some awesome rez abilities to keep everyone up and going.
2. Guardian - Heals more heals and defense. They have great defense not the best offense but they just last and last. One of the best Arena classes out there. In the WvWvW pvp they are great supporting characters with their blocks, walls and heals.
3. Mesmer - Confusion is what they make. lots of clones. I personally did not like them and I truely believe that they are the bottom of the ladder on strength. They will probably be tweaking in the first few months of the game.
4. Necro - I did not like them at all. Their aoe spells were mostly PBAE and they were kind of gimmicky. Lots will disagree with me im sure but this class needs some work for it to be better i think.
5. Rangers - Fun in WvW pvp, a little lacking on escape mechanics in the arena however. Damange is great, the 2h sword ranger is currently one of the top in DPS. They do suffer from serious pet AI issues. This is my favorite or second favorite class so far in the beta.
6. Thief - I didnt play much of a thief but they are hard to master and their shadowstep mechanic could of been better. They are squishy and in open world pvp i do think they are fodder more or less. Arena pvp they are pretty good once you get the hang of them.
7. Warrior - This class if fun, they have range, they have strong melee, they have lots of defense. They are the only class that AOE skills do not have a little circle on the ground. This class is great in arena with all the snares, this class is also good in WvW with all the gap closers. Possibly this class may be hit with the nerfbat in release in the first few months.
8. Engineer - Largely ignored in my playthroughs. I did not like the mechanics and everyone just ignored the turrets as if you were half smart you could avoid them entirely negating the engineer.

Well, some of them do have heavier armor because they usually just fight closer, I think. I like some distance, though in PvE that can still be quite hard to accomplish when the beasties just keep running up to you, haha. I also like the look of the lighter armors better.

I didn't even know the armors made any difference but for cosmetics. I didn't really spend that much time examining the mechanics too closely. That's kind of neat I guess. Being able to bring some heavy ranged power while having heavy armor.
Though i guess I keep hearing warriors might be a tad OP and'll be getting the nerfbat. Maybe I won't want to make them my first class choice....heh.

Armors-- there are 3 classes of armos, light(cloth) medium(leathers) heavy(metal). The armors are split across the 3 types of professions which are scholar (elementalist, necro, mesmer) adventurer (thief, engineer, ranger) and soldier (warrior, guardian). The heavy armors do absorb a little bit more damage, but most of your absorbtion comes from toughness, that anyone can get from trait lines, runes, etc. Also, Health seems vastly more important than armor, since all condition damage is unmitigated by armor.
Range/Melee. All classess can do both pretty well, some are more squishy than others, but usually have abilltiies to compensate. You would be surprised how tanky an elementalist can be when specced for it, a dagger/dagger or scepter/dagger Ele is as dangerous at melee as a thief or warrior, perhaps more so
Roles. The holy trinity of most mmo's is gone, However gw2 does have its own roles, such as damage, support, CC, roamer, cap defender etc. Most classes can spec themselves to fill pretty much any role, though some are a little better at certain roles than others.
Capio- Guardians kick ass at support and defending, while still having good damage output, depending on how you spec, As for dps, alot of things have changed from one BWE to the next, so its hard to say what state all the classes will be in at release, but Warrior and Ele have both incredible burst and sustained damage (both direct and condition), Necro have some ridiculous condition builds. Engineers are a unique playstyle but very strong. Thieves have good burst, but horrible sustained damage (due to initiative)
Just my two cents
